Description

Diazepam 10 mg is a benzodiazepine medicine. It works by enhancing the activity of GABA, a chemical messenger that reduces activity in the brain and nervous system. This produces calming, sedative and muscle-relaxing effects.

What it is used for

Depending on the prescription, diazepam may be used for:

• Severe or disabling anxiety, generally for short-term treatment.
• Muscle spasms and muscle-related conditions.
• Certain types of seizures/convulsions, as an adjunct treatment.
• Symptoms associated with acute alcohol withdrawal.
• Sometimes as a pre-medication before dental procedures or surgery.

About the 10 mg strength

A 10 mg tablet contains 10 mg of diazepam. It is a relatively strong tablet strength and should be taken only at the dose and frequency prescribed for you. Diazepam is a prescription-only medicine.

Diazepam has a long duration in the body. Its active metabolite, nordiazepam, can have a half-life of several days, so effects can accumulate with repeated use.

Important precautions

The main concerns with diazepam are drowsiness, impaired coordination, tolerance, dependence and addiction. Stopping it suddenly after regular use can cause withdrawal symptoms, so treatment is normally reduced gradually under medical supervision.

Avoid alcohol while taking diazepam because the combination can greatly increase sedation and can dangerously depress breathing. Extra caution is also required with opioid medicines and other medicines that cause sedation.

Common effects can include sleepiness, tiredness, muscle weakness, dizziness, reduced concentration and impaired coordination. You should not drive or operate machinery if diazepam makes you sleepy or affects your alertness.
